On Friday, November 6, 2026, we welcomed Professor Tina Huynh from the University of Puget Sound (USA) to present an international seminar entitled “Music Education of the Immigrant: A Holistic Approach to Heritage Preservation and Fluency Across the Vietnamese Diaspora.” The seminar attracted participants from a wide range of academic fields and backgrounds.

Professor Huynh has conducted extensive fieldwork in the United States, Germany, France, and Taiwan, exploring Vietnamese immigrant communities in different social and cultural contexts and examining the diverse ways in which music is learned and practiced within them. During the seminar, she highlighted how differences in citizenship status and social conditions across countries influence the ways immigrant communities adapt to their new environments. She also demonstrated how these differences shape people’s relationships with music and the transmission of musical culture across generations.

The seminar stimulated lively discussion on the process through which musical traditions are passed on within immigrant communities, including what aspects of cultural heritage may be lost and what new cultural forms may emerge. Professor Huynh also shared that she will soon begin research in Japan, and we look forward to learning more about the results of her future work.
